During its February meeting, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) officially acknowledged Florida bass as a unique species and updated regulations to reflect the name change. According to a 2024 news release, the American Fisheries Society confirmed that Florida bass (Micropterus salmoides) is genetically distinct from largemouth bass (Micropterus nigricans). Despite this recognition, current bass fishing regulations remain unchanged.
“This is exciting news for Florida and bass anglers everywhere,” said Tom Graef, Director of FWC’s Division of Freshwater Fisheries Management. “Florida bass grow larger than any other bass species, and this distinction underscores their significance. Recognizing them as a separate species reinforces our dedication to conservation efforts and ensures that future generations can continue to experience the thrill of catching these incredible fish.”
